At Sidemoor we believe that all children should experience the world beyond the classroom as an essential part of learning and personal development.
Learning Outside the Classroom(LOtC) is the use of places other than the classroom for teaching and learning. It is about getting our children out and about, providing them with challenging, exciting and different experiences to help them learn. LOtC can take place outdoors or indoors, at school, in our local area or further afield and supports all areas of the curriculum. LOtC opportunities at Sidemoor include:
- Using the school grounds
- Forest School
- Educational visits
- Residential trip
- Use of the local environment
- Visits to places of worship
LOtC offers the opportunity to promote and develop a range of learning outcomes:
- Enjoyment and motivation
- Confidence and resilience
- Social and emotional well-being
- Enironmental awareness
- Problem solving
- Working co-operatively
- Enthusiasm for learning
At Sidemoor LOtC experiences are built into our curriculum planning to provide all children with frequent, continous and progressive learning experiences.
Maths in Year 1
The children in Year 1 have been learning about measuring using non-standard units of measure. First, they had to go and find a stick and bring it back. We looked at them and talked about different ways we could measure them. The children had the choice of, finger widths, hand spans, footprints and strides. They decided on the best unit to measure their stick with and then estimated how many units it would measure before actually measuring it. The children then went off and chose different things in the playground to measure with one of the units above or use their “measuring stick”. Again, they had to choose a suitable unit, estimate first and then measure. They all had a wonderful time and although did not always fill in their recording sheet correctly, definitely became more skilled in choosing suitable units to measure in!
In Year 2 the children have been learning about fractions. They made a fractions wall using sticks.
Year 4 having been enjoying taking their learning outside of the classroom, they have been, counting outside using maths sticks, creating Rangoli patterns, re-enacting The Battle of Kadesh on our Egyptian day and building Egyptian Shadufs .
